Howdy Pax Velo:
An incident occurred a week or so ago while riding with CAPT Dave Gleisner that is worth announcing. This wasn't the first time it occurred, just the first time we've reported it.
While riding in the vicinity of 24698 Jones Rd. (just after turning North from McIntosh Rd heading down the hill), two sets of dogs from homes on the right side of the street (both right next to each other) were on the loose and proceeded to advance upon us. It isn't the first time that we've been attacked here, but it is the first time that four dogs attacked at once.
Usually, we are able to outrun them, as this is a downhill section (we were traveling North). If the dogs see you coming, they can get an angle on you and then, you will not be able to outrun them-they are just too fast.
The description of the dogs were as follows: (1) brown mutt, 3ft tall, looks like a small Akita; (1) white Pitbull, same height; (2) Large German Shepherds, very fast, not very nice.
Each time we've encountered these canines, they have been loose, with no owner in sight. After much yelling at the dogs and to the invisible owners, the dogs backed off. I've had to stop the bike, get off and shield myself using the bike as a barrier.
This incident was reported to the St. Mary's Animal Control, and if this occurs to anyone of you, please report it to 301-475-4200. You will have to fill out a witness statement, but maybe, with enough complaints, we can get these dogs off the street for good, and make riding in Amish Country a pleasant experience.
Thanks for reading on. Ride hard!
